If you allow your NREMT certification to lapse, you are still allowed reentry into the National Registry. There are two types of lapsed NREMT certifications and it depends on the length of time your certification has been lapsed. If your certification has been lapsed for 0-24 months, or more than 24 months you have different requirements for reentry. To view this on the NREMT website go here: https://www.nremt.org/rwd/public/document/emt and scroll towards the bottom of the page and select ‘lapsed certifications.’

If you have a lapsed certification between 0-24 months AND a current state license reentry can be granted if:

  • The initial Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) educational program was completed more than two years ago
  • The candidate is currently state licensed at the EMT level
  • Completion of a state-approved EMT refresher course OR 24 hours of equivalent continuing education topic hours within the past two years.

If your certification has lapsed between 0-24 months, reentry into the National Registry may be granted if:

  • 40 hours of continuing education that meets all requirements of the 2016 National Continued Competency Program within the past two years
  • A state approved BLS skills verification
  • The National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Computer-Based (Cognitive) Examination
  • And holds a current CPR-BLS for "Healthcare Provider" or equivalent credential

If your certification has been lapsed for 24 months or more, reentry into the National Registry may be granted if:

  • 40 hours of continuing education that meets all requirements of the 2016 National Continued Competency Program within the past two years
  • A state approved BLS Skills Verification
  • The National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Computer-Based (Cognitive) Examination
  • And holds current CPR-BLS for "Healthcare Provider" or equivalent credential
